7 Gold seal overall title for Dimapur at Inter-District school meet

Dimapur District emerged as the overall champion at the Inter-District Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) and Government High School (GHS) Tournament 2026, finishing with seven gold medals, along with one silver and one bronze.

Hosted by the District Education Office, Mokokchung, at Imkongmeren Sports Complex and funded by Samagra Shiksha Nagaland, the meet brought together over 600 student-athletes representing 17 districts: Tuensang, Shamator, Mon, Phek, Tseminyu, Mokokchung, Niuland, Longleng, Peren, Chumoukedima, Noklak, Kohima, Kiphire, Meluri, Dimapur, Wokha, and Zunheboto.

The competition covered a range of track and field events such as 100m and 200m sprints for both boys and girls, 4x100m relays, 1500m (boys), 800m (girls), discus throw, shot put, and long jump. Team events included badminton doubles (boys and girls), girls’ volleyball, and boys’ sepak Takraw.

Kohima finished second in the medal tally with four golds, two silvers, and one bronze, while Mokokchung secured the  third position with two golds, four silvers, and five bronzes. Zunheboto’s Aron was named Best Boy Athlete, while Neshe Moanyu Konyak of Dimapur was named Best Girl Athlete.

At the closing programme, Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, who attended as guest of honour, spoke on the importance of sports in overall development. He said that education goes beyond academics and includes building teamwork, resilience, and discipline through co-curricular activities.

Principal Director of School Education, Shashank Pratap Singh in his congratulatory message announced that football kits and sports equipment would soon be distributed to government middle schools across the state. He also noted that while medals are significant, the effort and participation of students remain equally important.

Singh further stated that physical education forms a key component of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and informed that the state government is working towards a comprehensive sports policy, with inputs from the department’s Physical Education Section.

As part of a CSR initiative, cricket kits were distributed to four schools with playground facilities: GHSS Tuli, GHS Changtongya, Mayangnokcha GHSS, and NI Jamir GHSS, during the event.
