TR Zeliang stresses sustainable energy for climate-resilient Nagaland

Deputy Chief Minister, TR Zeliang on Thursday said that sustainable energy has become more relevant than ever at a time when the country is experiencing the consequences of its dependence on fossil fuels and the ongoing global crisis.

Addressing a seminar on “Climate Smart Nagaland: Advancing Health & Livelihood Resilience”  at Hotel Vivor, Kohima, organized Organised by SELCO Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and Department of Health & Family Welfare, Zeliang expressed confidence that the partnership between the Government and SELCO Foundation would opne new avenues for mutural benefit and sustainable development.

The programme highlighted the impact of clean energy interventions implemented across 325 health facilities in Nagaland to improve healthcare services in the State, launch upcoming livelihood initiatives and discussing future strategies for Climate resilient development in the state.

Zeliang also commended the “Energy 4 Health” initiative being implemented by SELCO Foundation in collaboration with the Department of Health & Family Welfare, stating that uninterrupted power supply in remote areas of the State is essential, particularly for public healthcare centres and other critical public services.

The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized that sustainable development can only be achieved through strong collaboration among departments, institutions and partner organisations, while adding that public-private partnerships and community participation are essential for creating meaningful and long-term impact.

Speaking on behalf of SELCO Foundation, CEO Dr Harish Hande said the partnership aims to develop climate-resilient solutions for the state and position the Northeast as a global knowledge hub with models that can be replicated elsewhere. He expressed confidence that the collaboration would contribute significantly to the state’s development goals.

The programme also included the screening of a short video showcasing the impact of the Energy for Health (E4H) programme in the state and the launch of the E4H coffee table book.

A panel discussion on the programme’s achievements, challenges and future plans featured Dr Kika Longkumer, Joint Director, DoHFW; Dr Victor, CMO Noklak; and Dr Singson, MO, Poilwa PHC.

Welcome address was delivered by S Tainiu, Secretary, H&FW Department, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Mereninla Senlem, Principal Director, DoHFW.

The programme was attended by Advisor for Youth Resources & Sports, Keoshu Yimkhiung, Advisor for New & Renewable Energy and NSDMA, Nyusietho Nyuthe, MLA, Dr. Tseihoutuo Rhutso, Deputy Commissioners, government officials from various departments and representatives of NGOs.
