A landmark survey conducted by NEXUSCIPHERGUARD INDIA has revealed a worrying gap between awareness and action on cybersecurity across Nagaland and the Northeast, with 87% of respondents lacking basic cybersecurity knowledge despite growing concerns over digital threats.

The survey, conducted between July 2024 and August 2025 among 1,250 working professionals, entrepreneurs, business owners, freelancers and students from across the region, found that while 72% recognize cyber threats as a major concern and over 84% want to remain digitally protected, fewer than 1% are willing to invest in cybersecurity solutions or services.

According to the findings, most users lack fundamental knowledge of online safety practices such as identifying phishing scams, creating strong passwords, recognizing unsafe websites and using two-factor authentication.

The study also found that only 26.4% of respondents expressed willingness to learn cybersecurity best practices, indicating a significant need for awareness and training initiatives.

NEXUSCIPHERGUARD INDIA stated that the findings highlight an urgent need for cybersecurity education, particularly in schools and colleges, where digital safety should be treated as an essential life skill. The firm also called for stronger collaboration between government agencies, educational institutions and cybersecurity organizations to expand awareness campaigns and training programmes.

The report further stressed the need for affordable and region-specific cybersecurity solutions to address the Northeast’s growing digital vulnerabilities. It noted that community leaders, teachers and youth volunteers could play a crucial role in spreading awareness and promoting safer online behaviour.

Describing the findings as a wake-up call, the survey concluded that the region faces a critical challenge, with awareness of cyber risks increasing but preparedness remaining alarmingly low. It warned that unless immediate steps are taken to improve digital literacy and cybersecurity practices, users across the Northeast will remain highly vulnerable to cybercrime and online fraud.
