Chumoukedima DPDB review Census preparations, discusses sanitation and traffic management

The monthly meeting of the District Planning & Development Board, Chumoukedima, was held at the DC’s Conference Hall, Chümoukedima on June 10 under the chairmanship of Advisor for Urban Development & Municipal Affairs and Chairman, DPDB, Chumoukedima, Zhaleo Rio.

The meeting began with a review of the minutes of the previous DPDB meeting. The board also deliberated on the agenda items placed before the house and approved the registration of Yimkhiung Baptist Borü Society, Naga United Village. In the case of KS Yimchunger Society, Vidima, the board directed the representatives to continue functioning and advised them to approach the board again after completion of three years along with a No Objection Certificate from the concerned tribal body for further consideration.

The board then deliberated on various issues relating to sanitation, solid waste management, environmental conservation, traffic management and Census preparations.

Addressing the members, Advisor Zhaleo Rio welcomed the newly inducted members of the board and called upon all departments to effectively implement government schemes and policies to ensure that benefits reach all targeted beneficiaries.

On sanitation and waste management, he stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness and directed the Chümoukedima Town Council to ensure regular clearance of waste and garbage. He encouraged the council to undertake awareness programmes on waste segregation and proper waste disposal practices and assured continued support from the government in implementing solid waste management initiatives.

Rio encouraged departments and institutions to provide dustbins in public places and undertake plantation drives, particularly around sports infrastructure and public facilities. Referring to the plantation drive carried out by the district administration and various departments on World Environment Day, he urged stakeholders to be mindful of the species of trees being planted and encouraged the planting of ornamental trees to enhance the district’s urban landscape.

On traffic management, the Advisor appreciated the efforts of the police department in enforcing speed limits along the National Highway and observed that the initiative would help reduce accidents caused by over-speeding and rash driving. Stating that no one is above the law, he called for strict enforcement of traffic regulations and urged the concerned authorities to take action against all violators in accordance with the law.

Deputy Commissioner, Chümoukedima, Polan John, NCS, highlighted the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the Census exercise currently underway. Stressing the importance of accurate data collection, he urged all enumerators and supervisors to carry out their duties diligently and ensure an error-free Census. He stated that Census data forms the basis for planning, policy formulation and developmental programmes, making accuracy vital for effective governance.

The Deputy Commissioner also informed the board that the revised Solid Waste Management Rules cover both urban and rural areas and provide for segregation of waste into four categories. He said that bulk waste generators are being identified and that coordination meetings have already been conducted with line departments for effective implementation of the rules.

During the meeting, DPO, DISHA, Orenthung Ngullie, presented a PowerPoint presentation on AIDS Suraksha and highlighted the programme’s objectives and activities being implemented in the district.

Field Trainers Alongba Ao and Arenla also presented a detailed overview of the Census process and self-enumeration procedures. The presentation covered planning and mapping exercises, recruitment procedures and training activities undertaken for the Census.

The board decided that the Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) will make a PowerPoint presentation on Solid Waste Management during the next DPDB meeting. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks from the chair.
