A 19-year-old tourist from Guwahati, Assam, identified as Hisahetuk Das, was rescued after reportedly falling nearly 100 feet from the trekking footpath below Khiyokesa on the way to Dzükou Valley at around 3 p.m. on July 18.
Despite heavy rain, steep cliffs, rugged terrain and dense dwarf bamboo vegetation, trained Southern Angami tour guides, assisted by volunteers from the Viswema Youth Organisation and Z Khel Viswema Youth Organisation, successfully reached the injured tourist and carried him to safety.
Commending the rescue effort, Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) president Zasitsolie Beio expressed sincere gratitude to the tour guides and volunteers for their selfless, courageous and dedicated service under extremely challenging conditions.
Beio credited the timely and decisive response initiated by SAYO vice-president and chairman of the Southern Angami Tour Guide Council, Virato Naleo, for ensuring the tourist was rescued safely.
He also thanked the Community Health Centre (CHC) Viswema for providing ambulance services and the Emergency Services of Naga Hospital Authority Kohima for promptly attending to the injured tourist.
“The swift response of the rescuers amazed the group accompanying the tourist. Their sincere acknowledgement reflects the efficiency and dedication of our community in serving the public,” Beio said.

Describing the rescuers’ efforts as exemplary, Beio said their commitment during critical weather conditions and across difficult terrain was highly commendable and prayed that they would continue to inspire others through their service to the people.
He also urged all local and visiting trekkers heading to Dzükou Valley to engage registered tour guides to ensure their safety. According to Beio, the situation could have been far more serious had the tourist not been accompanied by a guide.
“Because of the timely intervention of the tour guide, the incident was handled quickly and the injured tourist was rescued without further delay,” he added.
Southern Angami Tour Guides are trained by various departments–Tourism Department, Forest Department, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Department, Medical Department etc. It functions under Southern Angami Tour Guide Council headed by Chairman who is also Vice – President Southern Angami Youth Organisation. It has 119 Registered Tour Guides presently operating in Southern Angami Areas.
