Nagaland University organises “Hands-on Experience with Drone Components” by TechFusion club.

The TechFusion Club, School of Engineering and Technology, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema organised hands-on workshop titled “Hands-on Experience with Drone Components” on September 30 at the SET Building, Nagaland University.

The programme brought together 31 students from various departments, providing them with an opportunity to gain practical exposure to drone technology, electronics, embedded systems and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The workshop aimed to introduce students to the fundamental components and working principles of drones while combining classroom concepts with live demonstrations, simulation and hands-on experimentation. Particular emphasis was placed on developing an understanding of drone electronics, flight control and practical circuit assembly.

During the session, participants were introduced to the construction of brushless drones, including the frame, brushless motors, Electronic Speed Controllers (ESCs) and batteries. The participants also learned about the design of a coreless mini drone, including its motor driver, ESP32-based flight controller and MPU6050 accelerometer and gyroscope.

The workshop also covered the fundamental principles of drone flight—throttle, yaw, pitch and roll—and demonstrated how these controls influence the movement and stability of a drone.

As part of the practical learning, students used PICA Sim for virtual flight practice. The simulator provided a safe environment for participants to familiarise themselves with drone controls before handling actual equipment.

The hands-on component of the workshop included demonstrations and practical exposure to ESP32 and MPU6050-based systems, remote controllers, multimeters, batteries and buck converters. In an additional practical session, half of the participants assembled a motor driver circuit using a MOSFET, flyback diode and resistor, gaining direct experience in basic electronic circuit construction.

The workshop helped participants understand the relationship between electronics, programming, mechanics and control systems in drone technology. It also provided students from non-electronics backgrounds with an introductory exposure to embedded systems and UAV technology.

The programme concluded with positive feedback from the participants. The event was coordinated by Rishab Misra, BTech (CSE) and Ravi Kumar Sah, BTech (IT). Shanchamo Yanthan, Club Mentor, expressed his gratitude to Prof N Venuh, Pro Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema and Prof Sujata Dash, Dean, NU-SET for their constant motivation and support towards such activities. He also encouraged the students to keep themselves busy with such club activities and develop their innovative skills and creativity through such workshops.

The TechFusion Club expressed its commitment to organising similar practical and interdisciplinary activities to promote technical learning, innovation, robotics and emerging technologies among students of Nagaland University.
