Agriculture State Level review meeting held

The Department of Agriculture held its State Level Review meeting on October 17 at the Conference Hall,Hotel Japfu Kohima with Mhathung Yanthan, Advisor of Agriculture as Special and R. Binchilo Thong, Agriculture Production Commissioner as the Guest of Honor.

While expressing concern over huge challenges faced by the farmer community in the State due to climate change and lifestyle of the people, Advisor Yanthan urged all the officers to be responsible and re-dedicated themselves inorder to deliver good to the people and improve farming practices. He also encouraged them to infuse modern technology which is applicable and change the farming and cropping system.

Yanthan said that in food production, there needs to have a food supply and food security ensured as it is not sufficient to only produce food  for the requirements but also to produces surplus food to generate cash income. “Without cash income farmers cannot do farming,” he added.Yanthan further urged the officers to make agriculture attractive by focusing on farmers as a business and enterprise to help the farmers and also to create better marketing Linkages facilities and channels.

Mentioning that a new Common Agriculture Policy is in progress that will set a  new standards for the environment and  make agriculture more sustainable to help the farmers, Yanthan reminded all the officers and staffs to put collaborative efforts and value ideas to faced the challenges ahead.

The Advisor also called for collaborative efforts in all the schemes that has been implemented in the State to bring change in the agriculture farming sectors.

Speaking as guest of honour APC R. Binchilo Thong apprised all the SDAOs and DAOs to execute their duties and bring out the solution to the local problems in their respective areas.Thong also reminded the gathering to report those affected areas caused by climate change in terms of productivity to the Research Institute like SARS,ICAR etc.

Encouraging all the field officers and staff to be available in the respective station during the onset of this Rabi season, Thong noted that all the necessary advisory should be disseminated to the farmers on time.

Additional Director C.Peter Yanthan in his keynote address said that the review meeting is to retrospect the works and performances in the field, and to examine the progress and identify any challenges or barriers that are inhibiting the execution of the performances. To make agriculture fit for 2030, and the new Common Agricultural Policy more effective, Yanthan called for a joint effort which will able to reach the department fundamental goal.

The review meeting was chaired by Director of Agriculture M.Ben Yanthan which was followed by Technical session.All the SDAOs and  DAOS from all the districts attended the meeting
