Moments after it was declared that Sanjay Singh will be the next president of Wrestling Federation of India, a tearful 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik, on Thursday, announced her retirement from wrestling. Sanjay Singh is a close aide of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh who is accused of sexually exploiting women wrestlers for many years.

Several wrestlers and supporters had camped at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for around 40 days demanding justice from the misdoings of Brij Bhushan who maintained his innocence.

Speaking to the media Sakshi Malik said that they had made demands for a woman president but there was not even a single woman member. She also asserted that the fight will continue and stated that the wrestlers of the new generation have to fight.

Medal winning wrestlers for India, Vineet Phoghat and Bajrang Punia were also at the press conference.

Former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh told media that Sanjay Singh becoming the new president of WFI is not only his personal victory but of the wrestlers of the country. “I hope that after the formation of the new federation, wrestling events will resume which were paused for the past 11 months….”, he said.
