All Nagaland College Students Union (ANCSU) has said that it is “shocked and appalled” by the brutal assault of a college student by Police personnel at Chümoukedima on 29th January 2024. “…it is disheartening to witness such a blatant abuse of power and a violation of the trust bestowed upon the police force by the public,” it stated.

In a press release, ANCSU President Tenyesinlo Bukh and General Secretary Arhonthung M Lotha expressed deep concern and strongly condemned the incident that has allegedly left Moalong Jamir, a B.A 2nd-semester student, with multiple injuries including left ear drum damage, fractured spinal cord and swollen kidney.

Stressing that law enforcement agencies play a crucial role in safety, ANCSU regretted that this act “undermines the principles of justice and fairness but also erodes the faith of the community in law enforcement”.

Further, the student body also said that while such isolated incidences should not tarnish the reputation of the entire police personnel, those responsible must be held accountable for their actions and ensure that such incidents are not repeated. “The use of excessive force, especially against unarmed individuals, is a clear violation of human rights and a direct contradiction to the principles of a just and democratic society,” it added.

ANCSU also called on all right-thinking citizens and organizations to vehemently condemn such menace crime so as to deliver justice to the innocent victim and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

The students’ union also appealed to the department concerned to carry out an immediate investigation and take appropriate action against those unjust police personnel.
