The 7th edition of Nagaland Street Fitness in Kohima on 17 September 2022.

The 7th edition of Nagaland Street Fitness was held at Sokhriezie Park, Kohima on 17 September. Over a hundred fitness enthusiasts from across the districts participated in the competition.

The competition included squats, push-ups and arm wrestling for both men and women. The winners for Best Physique and Strongest Gym were also selected.

In an interaction with Nagaland Tribune, Yanpvuo Kikon, a member of Nagaland Street Fitness, said ‘Nagaland Street Fitness’ was a random idea that became a reality.

“The main objective was just to have fun and watch people compete, but the vision got clear as we saw people take so much interest to not just watch but also participate,” he said.

Kikon stated that with each Edition, the event got more serious, and the objective took shape by itself to inspire a culture of fitness among Nagas.

He also said it is important for the Nagas – who are known as warriors – to work out and remain strong. Kikon added that working out does not just help to maintain physical fitness but also helps us in mental health, making the mind “stronger, sharper, focused, resilient and less susceptible to frustration, depression and mental anxiety.”

Speaking about the challenges faced by the fitness community, Kikon said the state needs more platforms to keep the enthusiasts competing throughout the year. Financial support and mentorship are also required to go professional and to compete both nationally and internationally.

Kikon also leaves a message for all the fitness enthusiasts that winning medals and bringing laurels is not going to be a distant story. He emboldens the community to continue inspiring one another and to take up fitness as a lifestyle “because we not only become physically stronger but also develop a more positive mindset which will greatly benefit us collectively as a society instead of being consumed by petty politics.”

The world has more opportunities than just politics and government jobs, he added.
