16,25,089 people have been affected by the persisting flood in Assam. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority informed that the number of deaths has also risen to 46 people after one more person died on 3rd July 2024.
According to ASDMA, 25,744 people are living across 181 relief camps in the state. 29 districts and 2800 villages have been affected, it added. The affected districts are Goalpara, Nagaon, Nalbari, Kamrup, Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, South Salmara, Dhubri, Jorhat, Charaideo, Hojai, Karimganj, Sivasagar, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Golaghat, Darrang, Biswanath, Cachar, Kamrup (M), Tinsukia, Karbi Anglong, Chirang, Karbi Anglong West and Majuli.
ASDMA said that Burhidihing river in Chenimari (Khowang) is “flowing above highest flood level” while the other rivers flowing above the danger level are Brahmaputra in Neamatighat, Tezpur, Dhubri, Guwahati and Goalpara, Subansiri in Badatighat, Dikhou in Sivasagar, Disang in Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri (S) in Numaligarh, Kopili in Kampur and Dharamtul, Barak in AP Ghat, BP Ghat, Chotabakra and Fuletrak, Dhaleswari in Gharmura, Katakhal in Matizuri, and Kushiyara in Karimganj.
The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, had said on Wednesday that the current floods situation is due to the cloud burst which occurred in Arunachal Pradesh and added that in case of such natural disasters, no human intervention can stop it. In the recent days, the CM has visited several affected areas and taken stock of the situation.
On Wednesday, he also said that the State Government aims to do a comprehensive damage assessment soon and provide assistance to households by 15th August 2024. “We also aim to completely build back the damaged public infrastructure by March 2025,” he informed.
Further, Sarma said that he has requested Cabinet Ministers to be stationed in various districts for the next three days and that his team of Ministers will be visiting the Barak Valley soon.
The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal also took stock of the flood situation plaguing the greater Dibrugarh region and reviewed the relief operations undertaken by the government for the benefit of the flood affected people.
The MP from Dibrugargh Constituency stated, “It is a matter of grave concern as the flood situation worsens in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia as well as many other parts of Assam. The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has also expressed his deep concern on the situation and is taking regular updates on it. Both the central and state governments have joined forces to fight this natural disaster and to take all necessary steps to provide relief to the flood affected people. The government will also take up steps to provide financial relief for the loss of materials by people in this flood. I have also directed the officials to take urgent measures to repair and building of embankments.”
