Landslide in Kigwema affects households and paddy fields, Kigwema-Mima-Chakhabama road completely cut off

The landslide which occurred in Kigwema along the Kigwema-Mima-Chakhabama road has affected several homes, paddy fields, gardens and poultry and piggery farms of villagers in Seca Khel. The Kigwema-Mima-Chakhabama road has completely being cut off.

Speaking to Nagaland Tribune, Kuto Yhokha, Chairman of Seca Khel, Kigwema village stated that one house was completely damaged by the landslide while another eight homes has been affected, displacing the residents. Many residents have also vacated their houses which sustained significant damage with large cracks in the walls and ground triggered by the landslide.

“We have cracks outside our kitchen which has spread to one bedroom,” says Akovi Thorie, a resident at Seca Khel. Thorie and her family will continue to stay in their house unless the landslide becomes worse.

The landslide area was a major spot for piggery farming for the residents in Seca village. With the farms completely destroyed, the villagers were compelled to rebuild their piggery farms in other locations.

Yhokha also mentioned that the government has provided tarpaulin and temporary financial aid to the affected households.

On July 12, the Kigwema youth conducted a community service raising bamboo structures in the affected areas, an indigenous method of mitigating landslide.
