Hours after the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) called for total shutter down and indefinite bandh in all Angami inhabited areas, it has retracted its call and said that the indefinite bandh would imply to restricting the movement of Assam Rifles and no other activities shall be disturbed.
Earlier in the day, the ASU had taken the drastic decision in protest of its President being physically assaulted “without any reason” by jawan(s) of the Assam Rifles in Kohima today. The student body held a press conference in the evening and also informed through a press release that its President suffered a blow on his face and was further intimidating him with
rifle butt. It stated that the jawans had initially refused to have manhandled him which resulted in a scuffle between the two parties resulting in tension and unrest.
“Therefore, in order to avoid any casualty in the wake of the situation getting blown out of proportion, keeping in mind the safety of the general public, the union called for an immediate shutter down to mitigate the movement of the general public during such chaos”, ASU clarified and apologised for any inconveniences caused on the business community in particular and the public at large during the safety measure period.
It also informed that considering the appeal of the Angami Students’ Union fraternity comprising of its seniors, range and units, the Union has pursue the following actions:
– grace period of 48 hrs given to the IGAR North, to identify the jawan concerned and take befitting actions as per the rule of army and the law of the land
– unconditional apology must be tendered in the public domain
– Until such time, the Assam Rifles must restrain from moving around the Angami inhabited areas to avoid any untoward incident.
– indefinite bandh implies to restricting the movement of Assam Rifles and no other activities shall be disturbed
Furthermore, the Angami Students’ Union has urged the Government of India to immediately repeal the AFSPA 1958 from Nagaland, as this Act continues to torture and harass the common people. The Union vehemently condemns this inhuman act and we shall not hesitate resorting to any democratic protest/action plans if the concerned parties fail to meet to the demands of the Union, ASU stated.
