Mass Public Walkathon in Tuensang on 7 October.

Mass public walkathons called by the Eastern Naga Students Federation (ENSF) took place across Eastern Nagaland on Friday.

The walkathon was called in support of the 26 August 2022 resolution of the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) to abstain from participating in any state or central election processes till its demand for a separate ‘Frontier Nagaland’ state is fulfilled.

The walkathon was held in all the administrative headquarters within the ambit of Eastern Nagaland that include six districts – Tuensang, Mon, Longleng, Noklak, Kiphire and Shamator.

We present a compilation of images – photos, screenshots captured from video clips – to offer a glimpse of the walkathon held at different places across Eastern Nagaland.

The walkathon saw a larger number of people, young and old, don their traditional attire and participate in the walkathon. A memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister was also submitted through the respective District Deputy Commissioners, appealing the Prime Minister to immediately and legitimately look into the legitimate demand of the Eastern Nagas for ‘Frontier Nagaland’.

The six districts are inhabited by seven Naga tribes – Chang, Konyak, Khiamniungan, Sangtam, Tikhir, Yimkhiung and Phom – with the six districts holding 20 of the 60 assembly seats of the state.

Although the Naga Hills Tuensang Area became part of the state of Nagaland in 1963, it was only in 1973 that the region entered the assembly, before which it had its own regional council headed by the Deputy Commissioner.

The demand for a separate state has gained traction ahead of assembly polls next year, however, this is not a recent demand. It has been an ongoing demand of the Eastern Nagas who cite negligence and lack of development in the Eastern region.
