President Droupadi Murmu on Friday virtually laid the foundation stones for several projects of Government of Assam and Union Ministries of Road Transport & Highways, Petroleum & Natural Gas and Railways from Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Guwahati.

Inaugurating the Railhead Depot of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd at Moinarbond, Silchar, the president said that the state-of-the-art depot at Moinarband will help in meeting the petroleum products requirements of the entire Barak Valley as well as of Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram.

On the last day of her maiden north east visit, President Murmu also laid foundation stones for 100 model Secondary Schools in the tea garden areas of Assam; 3000 model Anganwadi centers; two highway projects; and modern Cargo-cum-Coaching Terminal at Aghtori, Guwahati.

She then flagged off the extended run of a train on the Guwahati-Lumding route to Shokhuvi in Nagaland and Mendipathar in Meghalaya, the first direct passenger train service between Nagaland and Meghalaya.

The President expressed confidence that the successful implementation of these schemes will provide new opportunities for business and employment, increase transportation facilities and strengthen the economy in the entire North Eastern Region including Assam.

Earlier in the day, Murmu offered prayers at the famous Kamakhya Temple, one of 51 Shakti Peethas, atop Nilachal Hills in Guwahati.

She was accompanied by Governor Jagdish Mukhi, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other dignitaries.

A priest at the Shakti Peetha told reporters, “The President and her daughter paid obeisance in the sanctum sanctorum and performed ‘parikrama’ of the temple.

“She offered puja and performed rituals. As the President has several programmes during the day, there was no time for interaction with her,”

Earlier this year, Murmu had offered prayer at the temple during her visit to the city while campaigning for the presidential election.
