The much-anticipated Longkhum Cherry Blossom Festival 2.0 taking place from November 27–29, 2024 under the theme “In Unison with Nature” was inaugurated today at Longkhum village, Mokokchung. The inaugural program was graced by Special Guest Marsanen Imsong, President of Ao Senden, and Guest of Honour Thsuvisie Phoji, Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung.
Special Guest Marsanen Imsong, President of Ao Senden in his address, acknowledged the efforts of the organizing committee for their dedication in bringing together culture, community, and nature.
“Longkhum is a place of immense beauty and rich heritage. This festival not only reflects the breathtaking landscape of Longkhum but also highlights the warm hearts and unity of its people. It stands as a testament to what a community can achieve when united by a shared vision and purpose,” he said.
Imsong emphasized that the Cherry Blossom Festival is more than just an event; it is a platform to showcase Longkhum’s potential—not only as a tourist destination but also as a hub of creativity, talent, and innovation. He noted how the festival creates opportunities for local entrepreneurs and farmers, celebrating the village’s unique traditions while reminding everyone of the importance of preserving its cultural treasures for future generations.
“I deeply appreciate Longkhum’s step-by-step approach to tourism, which focuses on hospitality and sustainability. By laying a strong foundation for sustainable tourism, the village is setting an example for others to follow,” he added confidently.
Imsong urged the youth of Longkhum Village to continue the unfinished tasks of their great leaders and spiritual figures, such as Imkongmeren and Rev. Lano Longchar, who played vital roles in shaping the community.
He highlighted the need for a comprehensive roadmap to preserve Longkhum’s vast forest areas and called for the establishment of micro-industries to boost the local economy. Additionally, he identified road connectivity, healthcare, and education as the three essential pillars of sustainable livelihoods, areas where Ao Senden is actively working.
Imsong appealed to the villagers to extend their support to Ao Senden in these endeavors, fostering a spirit of cooperation and collective progress. “Let us work together, young and old alike, to ensure that Longkhum thrives and becomes a shining example of community-driven development,” he concluded.
In his address, Thsuvisie Phoji acknowledged the efforts of the organizing committee and commended their hard work and dedication to this initiative. He remarked that although the Longkhum Cherry Blossom Festival had a modest beginning in its first edition last year, it has now evolved into something significant with great potential.
“Small beginnings often lead to great achievements, and I see a bright future for this initiative in the years to come,” he said.
He highlighted the tourism potential of Nagaland, noting that while the state is known for the Hornbill Festival, which attracts visitors from across the country, Nagaland still struggles with limited tourism beyond this event. He pointed out the challenges of poor infrastructure and road conditions as significant setbacks preventing the State from attracting more tourists.
Despite these challenges, Phoji praised Longkhum Village for taking the initiative to promote itself as a tourist destination without relying on government support. He encouraged the community to continue their efforts, emphasizing the importance of preserving the village’s natural beauty and resources.
“Every major event or achievement has a modest beginning, so do not be discouraged. Longkhum is one village that has immense potential for tourism, with its altitude, eco-tourism opportunities, and rich natural resources. However, while modernizing, it is crucial to preserve our ethnicity and originality because people around the world travel to witness the authenticity of our environment.”
He further urged the village to avoid cutting down trees and instead nurture them, paying tribute to the forefathers who were pioneers in tree planting. “The responsibility to conserve nature lies with the people of the village. It is up to you to decide what legacy you leave for future generations,” he added.
Phoji called on Longkhum to organize its resources well, maintain its authenticity, and ensure a memorable experience for visitors. “When tourists come and have a positive experience, they will share it on social media and with others. This will not only benefit Longkhum but also the neighboring villages.”
He concluded by stating that Longkhum’s rich natural resources, including its famous vegetables like cabbages and tomatoes, are a testament to its potential. “With careful planning, unity, and authenticity, success will follow, and Longkhum can become a shining example for other villages”, DC noted.
The program was chaired by Apoksangba. Invocation was delivered by Rev. T. Aka Jamir, Pastor of Longkhum Baptist Arogo while the welcome address was given by Imtisungkum, Convenor of the organizing committee, who expressed gratitude to the attendees and outlined the significance of the Longkhum Cherry Blossom Festival in promoting tourism and local culture. Greetings were extended by the Chairman of the Village Council. A special musical number by Limayanger enthralled the audience. The event was followed up by Folk Tale Event and Country Special & the Oldies.
A total of 50 stalls are showcasing a variety of products, including food cuisines, local farm produce vegetables and fruits, handloom, and handicrafts, all crafted by local entrepreneurs and available for purchase by visitors. Additionally, entrepreneurs from Kohima and Dimapur district are also participating in the event.
A lineup of local artists and bands is set to entertain and enthrall the audience and visitors throughout the festival.
According to the convenor, Longkhum Cherry Blossom Festival 2.0 has embraced the recent trend of promoting health and fitness. Events such as arm wrestling, strongman competitions, a marathon, and cycling will be organized in collaboration with the Mokokchung Bodybuilding Association and the Mokokchung Athletic Association.
