With peace prevailing in the Northeast, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah has called for change in the culture and direction of the police in the region. Addressing the 72nd Plenary Session of North Eastern Council (NEC) in Agartala, Tripura on 21 December 2024, Shah pointed out that for years, the focus of the police in all states was solely on combating insurgency and violence, however, the focus should now be on ensuring citizens receive their rightful entitlements for which, a change is needed in the approach, training, and focus of the police in every state of the Northeast.

The Home Minister mentioned that the prerequisite for achieving this change is the complete implementation of these three new laws – Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 – across all states in the region. He stated that it is time to ensure that every citizen in the region is granted their constitutional rights to property, honor, and family protection, which are included in these three laws.

Shah urged all the governors present at the meeting to personally monitor this process, as it is crucial to establish the belief in the Northeast that citizens can obtain justice through filing an FIR.
