A passenger plane carrying 64 people on board and a military Black Hawk helicopter carrying three soldiers collided near Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington D.C. on late Wednesday night.
According to a joint press statement from the Metropolitan Police Department and the DC Fire and EMS Department, multiple calls were received for an aircraft crash above the Potomac River at 8:53 pm.
The American Airlines said in its statement that the American Eagle Flight 5342 was en route from Wichita, Kansas (ICT), to Washington, D.C. (DCA). There were 60 passengers and four crew members on board the aircraft.
Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser informed at a media conference that the DC Fire and EMS Department, supported by the Fire Department and Police Departments from across the Metropolitan region were executing the search and rescue operations in the “dark and cold water in the Potomac River.
The rescuers have not confirmed pulling out any survivors from the icy river.
