The Department of Sociology, Nagaland University, is organising a Two-Day National Seminar on ‘Social Lives of Infrastructure in Northeast India: Navigating Diversity, Connectivity and Resilience’ during 27-28 February 2025 in Lumami. The seminar is jointly sponsored by ICCSR, New Delhi, Nagaland University & S. Supongmeren Jamir, Member of Parliament. The inaugural ceremony took place on 27th February 2025 in the Conference Hall, Department of Sociology, Lumami Campus. Prof. Temjensosang, Director, Research and Development Cell, Nagaland University, who chaired the ceremony, set the tone for the event.
Prof. Athungo Ovung, Head of the Department of Sociology, Nagaland University, delivered the welcome address. He warmly welcomed all the guests, delegates, and participants, highlighting the significance of the seminar and the opportunities it presented for academic growth and intellectual exchange. The Chief Patron, Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, in his address emphasised the importance of fostering interdisciplinary research and academic collaboration while acknowledging the social sciences’ role in societal development. The second semester Masters students of the department presented a special musical number, adding a cultural touch to the proceedings.
The Keynote Address was delivered by Prof. Amarjeet Singh from the Centre for North East Studies & Policy Research, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Prof. Singh spoke on contemporary issues in the region, offering a comprehensive perspective on socio-political and cultural dynamics in Northeast India.

Some of the key points he touched upon were the development challenges in North East India, in terms of logistics, terrain, corruption, and political challenges like insurgency and ethnic conflicts. He also emphasised the development disparity in the country, with North East being the most unfortunate region. His insights also covered Look East/Act East Policy, the role of DONER ministry, North East council, Autonomous District Councils and the State becoming insignificant in their contributions to infrastructural development.
The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr Suraj Beri, the Organizing Secretary of the National Seminar. Dr. Beri expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, speakers, participants, and everyone who contributed to the success of the programme. The inaugural session was organised with a welcoming atmosphere and an air of anticipation. It was attended by Prof. M.K. Sinha, Dean, School of Social Sciences, Heads, faculty, officers, research scholars and PG students setting the stage for the sessions and discussions to follow.
