The SFS Football Academy held the inaugural programme for the 2nd Session on March 8, 2025 at the St. Francis De Sales School Auditorium, Medziphema. A press release informed that the evnt was graced by Vizovor Liezietsu, President of the Football License Coaches of Kohima District (FLCoKD), as the special guest.
In his address, Liezietsu commended the academy for its contribution to football development in Nagaland. Though the academy has been nurturing young footballers for the past eight years, its official recognition in 2024 marks a significant milestone.
He lauded its achievements, particularly its victory in the State Level Pre-Subroto cum Junior Football Tournament 2024 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima, and its representation at the national level in Bangalore. The academy’s recognition as the Best Academy of 2024 by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) further underscored its excellence.
Acknowledging the academy’s management, Liezietsu also credited the contribution of the coaches for their dedication to nurturing young footballers.
Highlighting the broader significance of sports, Liezietsu emphasized discipline as a defining trait of successful athletes. “True respect is earned not just by skill but by the discipline and character one cultivates,” he said.
He stressed that talent alone is not enough; hard work, preparation, and perseverance are key to success. He also pointed out the growing career opportunities in sports beyond playing professionally, listing roles such as strength and conditioning coach, sports psychologist, physiotherapist, coach, manager, journalist, commentator, and analyst, among others.
Drawing from his personal experience, Liezietsu recounted his journey as a young footballer who balanced multiple responsibilities while training. He shared his achievements to inspire the students, including representing India in the U-17 AFC World Cup Qualifying Round (2003-04), playing for Mohun Bagan AC and City Athletic Club Kolkata, and representing Nagaland in the Santosh Trophy five times.
He also highlighted the crucial role of parents in supporting young athletes and urged them to provide encouragement, financial backing, and access to proper training while promoting a balance between academics and sports.
Liezietsu remarked, “The government job market is saturated, but sports offer an alternative path with immense potential,” while also stressing the need for societal recognition of sports as a legitimate career path.
He commended St. Francis De Sales School authorities for their vision in establishing the academy, stating that such initiatives are vital for bridging the gap between talent and opportunity in Nagaland.
Furthermore, he encouraged young players to stay disciplined and work towards making a name for themselves and their state.
Earlier, Rev. Fr. Benjamin Nakho, Principal of SFS School, delivered the welcome address. Coach Ciu Zashümo provided an overview of the academy’s achievements and future plans, while the programme was led by Coach Menovilie Talie.
