In order to strengthen the elderly care in India, President Droupadi Murmu virtually inaugurated a newly constructed Senior Citizens Home at Etsutchukha Colony near the Futsal ground, Wokha on May 2. The inauguration, part of a broader national initiative, included similar launches in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand—underscoring the central government’s commitment to senior citizen welfare.

Present at the virtual ceremony was Dr. Virendra Kumar, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment. The event marked the launch of several key projects aimed at improving the quality of life for India’s ageing population. Among the major announcements was the inauguration of the Senior Citizen Welfare Portal, an online platform designed to provide senior citizens with easy access to government schemes, support services, and welfare initiatives. The platform is expected to streamline service delivery and create a more inclusive system for India’s elderly.

In addition to the portal, the President also launched five new Old Age Homes, including the facility in Wokha. These homes are part of a broader infrastructure initiative by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to address the growing needs of senior citizens across the country.

As part of the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana, the President also distributed Assisted Living Devices—aids intended to improve mobility and ease daily life for elderly individuals—further reinforcing the government’s effort to enhance senior care through tangible support.

A highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry and Brahma Kumaris, aimed at providing moral, emotional, and social support to senior citizens through structured programs and outreach efforts.

Following the inauguration, C. James Ezung, District Welfare Officer, addressed the media highlighting the importance of the much-needed facility for Wokha. Ezung said. “It will help address key welfare concerns of our senior citizens and offer them dignity, comfort, and support.”

Ezung informed that advertisements will soon be published to raise awareness, and a dedicated helpline will be established to facilitate registration. Seniors interested in availing services at the Wokha Senior Citizens Home can register through the Department of Social Welfare at the District Welfare Office, or directly approach the NGO managing the facility at Etsutchukha Colony.
