The Liju Federation of Wozhuro Block, operating under the aegis of the Nagaland State Rural Livelihood Mission (NSRLM), held its 2nd Annual General Meeting at the Likya Community Hall in Wokha on Thursday. The occasion was graced by Dr E. Mhonlumi Lotha, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Wokha, who attended as the special guest.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Lotha urged Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to proactively engage with various departmental schemes and support systems aimed at enhancing rural livelihoods. She underscored the importance of viewing farming from a broader perspective, highlighting that it extends beyond traditional agriculture to include allied sectors such as livestock rearing, fisheries, and beekeeping. Encouraging members from the eleven villages under the Wozhuro Block, she emphasised the need to explore the diverse opportunities provided by government programmes.

Dr Lotha assured participants that the department is committed to supporting SHGs with technical guidance and manpower for those interested in establishing farming ventures. She informed the gathering about the availability of artificial insemination services at a nominal cost of ₹500 per semen pouch and mentioned government schemes such as the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units (CMMFI) and the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), which offer financial support for livestock-related activities.

She also brought attention to pressing animal health concerns, particularly African Swine Fever, a rapidly spreading airborne disease that currently has no vaccine. Stressing the importance of preventive measures, she advised farmers to practise strict biosecurity, maintain cleanliness on their farms, and restrict access to sensitised visitors. In cases of unexplained illness or death among pigs, immediate reporting to the veterinary department was encouraged. She recommended the proper disposal of dead animals by burying them with lime to prevent the spread of infection.

Furthermore, Dr Lotha spoke about rabies, a serious zoonotic disease, and emphasised the necessity of vaccinating dogs to prevent transmission. She reassured the attendees that vaccines are readily available and encouraged responsible pet ownership.

Concluding her speech, Dr Lotha reaffirmed the department’s unwavering support in providing training, resources, and assistance to SHGs, aiming to uplift rural communities and foster economic development.

Rachel Himb, Block Development Officer of Wozhuro, also addressed the gathering and highlighted the significant role played by SHGs in promoting sustainable livelihoods and reducing poverty. She remarked that although Wozhuro is one of the youngest blocks in the district, it has quickly emerged as one of the most dynamic and forward-looking. She urged SHG members not to become complacent but to continue participating in trainings, programmes, and meetings, assuring them that the administration will provide the necessary support through capacity-building initiatives as required.

Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies (ARCS), Obendangba, commended the active involvement of SHG members and encouraged the Cluster Level Federation (CLF) to pursue registration as a cooperative society. He assured them of continued assistance and guidance throughout the registration process.

Adding a personal dimension to the event, Coco SHO Yichani Khuvung, a member of the Tchumeru Village Level Organisation (VLO), shared her success story. With financial assistance from her SHG, she was able to establish a piggery and poultry business, and later launched a banana plantation comprising over 1,000 trees, which are now fruit-bearing and ready for market. She expressed her gratitude to the SHG for their timely support during medical emergencies and in covering her children’s educational expenses, which has enabled them to pursue their studies without interruption.

The event also included recognition of exemplary contributions by SHGs and individuals. Mangasa VLO from Pongidong village was honoured as Best VLO, while Myanta SHG from Totsu village received the Best SHG award. Lily Odyuo from Khumtsu village was recognised as Best Village Facilitator cum Multi-purpose Book Keeper, Yanbano M Ovung from New Longchum village was named Best Community Service Provider, and Chanchibeni from Khumtsu village received the Best Community Resource Person for Enterprise Promotion award.
