In a significant gesture to preserve and honour Nagaland’s rich cultural heritage, the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) presented a rare historical photograph to the Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan, at Raj Bhavan, Kohima on June 4.

The presentation was made by Advisor for Information & Public Relations and Soil & Water Conservation, Imkong L Imchen, accompanied by Director Dzüvinuo Theunuo and Joint Director Asangla Imsong of DIPR, on behalf of the Department.

The photograph—believed to date back to the early 1900s—depicts a large gathering, possibly from a central Tenyimia village, engaged in a traditional or communal setting. Though the specific event, identities of those featured, and the photographer remain unknown, the image holds significant historical and ethnographic value. It has never been published before, enhancing its rarity.

Unearthed from the Department’s archival collection, the original negative was carefully restored and reprinted in April 2025 as part of DIPR’s ongoing effort to document, preserve, and share Nagaland’s visual history with future generations.

Governor La Ganesan expressed deep appreciation for the thoughtful gesture and commended the Department for its efforts in safeguarding the visual heritage of the state.

This initiative underscores DIPR’s enduring commitment to cultural preservation and the promotion of Nagaland’s diverse legacy through archival work.
