In a continued effort to streamline taxi operations and ensure legal compliance across Nagaland, the Angami Youth Organisation (AYO), in collaboration with the All Nagaland Taxi Association, has extended its ongoing taxi verification drive till July 2. This was announced by AYO President, Kesosul Christopher Ltu during a press briefing held at the AYO Office in Kohima today.
Ltu informed that the verification drive, which began on June 24, has already registered and verified 1,427 taxis, however, a significant number of vehicles, particularly in designated verification points such as Lerie, AG, BOC, Japfü Hotel Junction Parking, and Paramedical, are yet to complete the process. Owing to overwhelming turnout, the registration counters remained open until 6 PM on several days and the organisers found it necessary to allot more time to cover the remaining vehicles, he added.
President Ltu noted that some vehicles were flagged due to incomplete documentation or the absence of either the driver or the registered owner. “We are not issuing the verified sticker to these vehicles until they complete all formalities,” he said.
The AYO President further clarified that any taxi whether local or regional, bearing NL01 or NL07 that fails to come forward for verification by July 2 will be assumed to have questionable or forged documents, and will not be allowed to operate beyond the deadline.
The verification process involves a rigorous three-step procedure. First, the documents of the vehicle and the owner, including sale or gift deeds and permits are checked. Next, the identity and credentials of the driver are recorded. Only after both stages are cleared is the verification card issued.
“This is a consumer-facing service, and in the event of any mishap, our records may help identify those involved. So we are taking every step seriously,” said the AYO president.
The AYO president also disclosed that discrepancies have already been detected in several cases, and a detailed report of the findings will be released in an upcoming press conference. The organisation clarified that even second or third owners of vehicles are being accommodated, albeit with specific remarks noted in the official records.
While emphasizing that the intent is not to harass genuine taxi operators, Ltu was unequivocal in stating that no unverified vehicle will be allowed to operate after July 2 under any circumstance. “The message is simple: No verification, no road,” he declared, urging all remaining owners and drivers to complete the process without delay.
The verification drive has been jointly organised by the Angami Youth Organisation and the All Nagaland Taxi Association, and has been widely supported by both the public and the transport community. However, the organisers reiterated that after July 2, no further registration will be entertained, and any vehicle not verified will be treated as operating illegally.
