The Eco Club of MGM College Dimapur organized a debate on the topic “Should
We Ban Single-Use Plastic Completely?” on August 30 in the college auditorium.
The event witnessed participation from students who presented compelling arguments both for and against the motion.
Speakers in favour of the ban highlighted the devastating impact of plastic on the environment, citing pollution of land and water bodies, hazards to wildlife, and long-term ecological imbalance. They strongly advocated for adopting sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives as a moral responsibility toward future generations.

On the other hand, participants opposing the motion underscored the convenience,
affordability, and large-scale employment linked with plastic manufacturing. They proposed
practical solutions such as gradual reduction, efficient recycling, and stricter regulations
instead of an outright ban, emphasizing the socio-economic consequences of a complete
prohibition.
The debate was engaging and kept the audience deeply involved throughout. After thorough evaluation by the judges, the team for the motion represented by Tunali, Alex and Tokupu was declared as the winner.
The event not only showcased the oratory skills of the students but also successfully
encouraged critical thinking and awareness about individual and collective responsibility in
addressing plastic pollution, a press release from the college stated.
