The 30th Freshers’ Social of Nagaland University’s Medziphema Campus was celebrated on September 19 with Akumla Chuba, IAS, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Department of Horticulture as the Chief Guest.
In her speech she applauded the students for joining the School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University (SAS, NU), Medziphema campus which has a long history and well-entrenched culture and tradition of academic excellence and of nurturing exceptional intellectual talent of young people, which is evident in the fact that the School has produced renowned alumni of Scientists, Academicians, Politicians, Bureaucrats, technocrats, etc.
Chuba asserted that as a fresher the students are now entering a chapter in their lives at a time when higher education is undergoing rapid and dramatic transformation, when technology like AI, IOT, drones and robotics for precision agriculture is on the rise, when traditional intellectual fields are shifting and converging, and when public expectations and demands of higher education are intensifying. But in these challenges lie incredible opportunities for them, to learn and grow as the future leaders of agriculture, horticulture, technology and soft and hard skills.

She urged the students to gain the knowledge, develop the skills, and foster the innovative spirit needed to tackle these issues head-on. She said that education extends beyond textbooks; it is about hands-on experience, collaboration, and a deep connection to the land and its people.
“You are the architects of our future food systems, the guardians of our natural resources, and the driving force for sustainable development,” Chuba declared.
She encouraged the students to be curious and eager to learn about the ever evolving technologies and ground-breaking research in the field of agriculture, horticulture, technology and vocational studies and that their minds should be like a sponge, ever ready to absorb and learn new knowledge and skills.
Prof L Daiho, Dean, SAS, NU gave the welcome address and exhortation, while speeches of freshers were from B.Sc. (Hons) Ag, B.Voc, M.Sc. (Ag), M.Tech, M.Voc, M.A. (RDP) and PhD programs of NU:SAS. The chairperson of the program was Tialumla T Sangtam, Literary Secy, SU: SAS. Honngam Phom, EU President, offered the invocation prayer while a musical piece was performed by Lee and Chum, the talented twins of SAS and the vote of thanks was proffered by Linnaeus Nakhro.
