With the Christmas season nearing, the National People’s Youth Front (NPYF) Dimapur has raised concern over the escalating prices of essential commodities and goods across local markets, particularly affecting those travelling from far-flung areas for seasonal purchases.
NPYF President Zato Sema stated that several traders and business establishments in Dimapur have reportedly been charging exorbitant rates, taking advantage of the festive rush. He expressed alarm that such practices particularly burden economically weaker households, turning what should be a season of celebration into one of financial struggle.
“The festive season should be a time of joy, not a period where citizens are subjected to unfair pricing and financial hardship,” Sema noted, urging authorities to intervene to prevent exploitative trade behaviour.
In a public appeal, NPYF requested the District Administration to maintain strict vigilance over market pricing during the festive period and enforce fair trade regulations. The union further called for regular inspection of market areas to check artificial inflation and unethical profiteering by traders, suggesting that swift penalties and legal action be taken against violators.

NPYF also proposed the establishment of a dedicated Public Grievances Cell—accessible both telephonically and online—to enable customers to report instances of overpricing, unfair trade behaviour, or harassment in the marketplace, ensuring timely response and redressal.
IT also urged the district administration to take prompt corrective action on complaints received, including issuing penalties, notices, or other legal measures against violators.
Sema maintained that proactive intervention by the authorities would not only protect consumers but also promote a healthy, transparent, and accountable market environment throughout the festive period.
The NPYF further called upon all traders and business establishments to uphold ethical practices and support the community during the festive season.
