The National People’s Party (NPP) Nagaland has expressed concern and strong disappointment over the denial of entry visa to US evangelist Rev Franklin Graham, whose visit to Nagaland was scheduled for November 30 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima. The programme, prepared as a large inter-denominational spiritual gathering, had drawn wide anticipation among churches and thousands of believers across the State.

In a statement issued by the Media & IPR Cell, NPP Nagaland said the decision has come “despite extensive preparations and prayerful anticipation”, and has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Christian community. The Party noted that Rev Graham’s visit was expected to serve as a moment of spiritual renewal and encouragement for the people of Nagaland.

“Nagaland’s Christian faith is not a ceremonial identity; it is the moral, spiritual and social backbone of the State,” NPP stated, adding that large Christian gatherings in Nagaland have historically contributed to unity, ethical guidance, community service and peace.

It said the cancellation of such a significant event strikes at the very heart of the people’s religious life and has caused deep pain and widespread disappointment/

The NPP said while it respects the sovereign authority of the Government of India and the necessity of legal processes, the manner in which this matter has been handled raises serious and disturbing questions about the treatment being meted out to the Christian minority in the country.

It warned that repeated restrictions on Christian faith engagements could send a dangerous signal that minority religious sentiments are being sidelined.

While acknowledging the authority of the Government of India in matters of visa processing, NPP stressed that the situation demanded transparency and fairness. “Freedom of religion is not a discretionary concession—it is a fundamental right. Any decision that appears to suppress or selectively restrict Christian religious expression demands urgent review, not silence,” the party asserted.

Stating that NPP Nagaland stands unconditionally with the Christian community of Nagaland and the nation, it demanded that concerned authorities ensure fairness, transparency, and consistency in all matters concerning religious gatherings and visits by faith leaders.

The party also reasserted that constitutional guarantees must be upheld without discrimination, hesitation, or bias.

It further said NPP Nagaland would continue to speak firmly for justice, freedom of worship, and equal treatment for all religious communities, adding that it remains firm in defending the spiritual and democratic values on which Nagaland and India are built.
