The third edition of the Hornbill extension was celebrated at the Doyang Tourist Resort in Wokha district on Thursday, with Er CH R John Zeliang, Executive Director (Technical) and Head of Project, DHEP NEEPCO/NTPC Ltd, gracing the occasion as the guest of honour.

The opening day featured an array of water and sporting events including traditional boat racing in both single and double categories, a 50-metre freestyle swimming competition, and a tug-of-war (men’s category, 8×8). The day’s festivities culminated with a musical extravaganza.

Addressing the gathering, Zeliang underscored the immense tourism potential of Wokha district, stating that tourism—alongside power generation—could serve as a key driver of the local economy. He emphasized that the quality of services extended to visitors would play a pivotal role in determining the success of tourism initiatives, noting that even a single family offering a clean and hygienic homestay could generate substantial income.

Reflecting on cultural transition, he expressed concern over the erosion of values such as trust, loyalty and honesty, which he described as the core essence of cultural celebration. He urged the community to nurture culture with an accommodative spirit for the collective advancement of society rather than individual gain.

“Culture is not stationary but evolving,” he said, advocating the removal of harmful practices while preserving authenticity and originality. He commended the organisers for their efforts in promoting culture alongside festivity and wished them success in the two-day event.

Deputy Director of Tourism, Lichumo Kikon, reaffirmed the department’s and the government’s commitment to developing tourism as a sustainable industry aimed at creating opportunities and strengthening the state’s economy. He encouraged citizens to learn the trade and offer quality services to both local and outside visitors. He also highlighted various government initiatives and projects focused on enhancing tourism in Wokha and across Nagaland.

In his welcome address, Dr Thungdemo Kyong, Chief of Team Metamorphosis, expressed gratitude to the Tourism department for its continued support and the trust placed in the association, which has successfully organised three editions of the event at Doyang. He assured that the association would continue to promote tourism and related activities in the district with increased public participation.

President of the Land Owners Union (LOU) Doyang, Roland Lotha, pledged the union’s cooperation in hosting such events to boost tourism in the area. He highlighted that Doyang, in addition to contributing to power generation and fishing, possesses tremendous tourism potential. He acknowledged NEEPCO Doyang for providing employment, supporting fishermen, and enhancing recreation through the scenic beauty of the region. He further urged young people to initiate innovative ventures to tap into tourism opportunities.
