The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has expressed grief at the tragic death of Anjel Chakma, a young student from Tripura and said this incident once again exposed the deep-rooted and persistent racism faced by people from the Northeastern region within the country.
Condemning the incident, the NPCC termed the reported statement by a Dehradun DSP official, dismissing racist slurs such as “Chinky, Chinese or momo” as a “remark in jest” and not a racial attack, as “deeply insensitive, irresponsible, and unacceptable.”
“Any remark targeting a person’s origin, colour, physical features, or ethnicity is racism—plain and simple. Trivialising such slurs normalises discrimination and reinforces the dangerous perception that people from the North East are somehow less Indian,” the NPCC stated.
The NPCC also questioned “Are citizens from the North East still forced to prove their Indianness in their own country?”
At this moment of immense sorrow, the NPCC extended solidarity with the bereaved family of Anjel Chakma and also shared their grief. It further demanded accountability, sensitivity training for law enforcement, and strong action against all forms of racial discrimination.
