A distinguished leader who held deep respect for rights of Naga people: Th. Muivah condoles passing of US President Jimmy Carter

Th. Muivah, General Secretary of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN) has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. “He was a distinguished leader who held deep respect for the rights of the Naga people and closely followed the progress of the Indo-Naga dialogue for many years. He envisioned a secure and honourable future for the Nagas,” stated Muivah in a condolence message issued today.

Demonstrating his unwavering interest and support, following the signing of the Amsterdam Joint Communique on July 11, 2002, President Carter wrote a letter to the then Prime Minister of India, Late Dr. Manmohan Singh, on June 18, 2005, mentioned the message.

In the letter, Carter is said to have commended Dr. Singh’s wise and courageous leadership in advancing the Naga political issue towards a peaceful and lasting solution that would ensure the rights of the Naga people while maintaining India’s security.

“With his passing, the Nagas have lost a great friend who deeply understood their rights. His legacy will continue to inspire and encourage the Naga political struggle, reaffirming their commitment to defend their God-given rights as a people and as a nation. On behalf of the NSCN and the Naga people, I extend our heartfelt prayers for the  eternal peace of Jimmy Carter’s soul,” expressed Muivah.
