In a dramatic political development, Suvendu Adhikari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured decisive victories in both Bhabanipur and Nandigram constituencies, defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in one of the most closely watched electoral battles in West Bengal.
According to data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI), Adhikari won the Bhabanipur Assembly seat by a margin of 15,105 votes after the completion of the 20th and final round of counting. The result marks a significant upset in a constituency long considered a stronghold of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Simultaneously, Adhikari also emerged victorious in Nandigram, securing 1,27,301 votes at the end of the final counting round, further consolidating his position as a key political figure in the state.
The Bhabanipur contest witnessed intense fluctuations throughout the counting process. Early rounds indicated a tight race, with Banerjee narrowing deficits at crucial stages. However, from the later rounds onward, Adhikari steadily expanded his lead, eventually pulling ahead decisively.
At one stage during the 16th round, Adhikari had secured 53,932 votes against Banerjee’s 53,369, reflecting a neck-and-neck contest before the BJP candidate surged ahead in subsequent rounds.

Despite attempts to recover lost ground, the Chief Minister was unable to regain momentum.
The atmosphere at the Bhabanipur counting centre remained tense, with large crowds and heightened political activity. Banerjee’s exit from the venue drew strong reactions from BJP supporters, underscoring the high-stakes nature of the contest.
Beyond these key constituencies, early trends across the state indicated a significant shift in West Bengal’s political landscape. The Congress appeared headed for a marginal presence, while the CPI(M) and other smaller parties struggled to gain traction in a highly polarised contest.
Adhikari’s twin victories in Bhabanipur and Nandigram are likely to have far-reaching political implications, potentially altering the balance of power in West Bengal and intensifying the rivalry between the BJP and the ruling TMC.
