Day 4 of Clean Doyang Mission: Almost 50% debris removed, team urges for support from stakeholders and public

In continuation with the task to clear the accumulated waste along the Doyang River, various departments and organizations came together for the Clean Doyang Mission on 11th June 2024.  Day 4 witnessed active participation from the Administration, NEEPCO, CISF, DDMA, 7 NAP, Home Guard & Civil Defence and SDRF, Water Resources, and Wokha Forest Division. Additionally, NGOs such as Team Eco Warrior, Team Better Dimapur, and student unions from various Ranges within Wokha along with Fishermen’s Union also joined the mission.

Pukha Lam, EAC and Area Commander for Clean Doyang Mission, speaking with the media, stated that the Committee for Clean Doyang Mission consisted of stakeholders from various departments. He informed that they commenced their preliminary survey on 7th June and proceeded with the Clean Doyang Mission from 8th June.

Highlighting the challenges being faced in cleaning the waste, Lam mentioned the hot and humid climate at Doyang and the risks associated with waste disposal and debris collection in the river. He assured that the team is doing its best and requested involvement from various stakeholders, NGOs, and the public in this mission.

L. Jonjibemo Odyuo, Nodal Officer, DDMA Wokha and Operational Chief & PRO of the Clean Doyang Mission, mentioned that they have tried various methods to tackle the operation and concluded that panel cleaning is more effective. He outlined the tasks assigned to stakeholders, with SDRF responsible for cleaning debris within the water and 7NAP personnel transporting collected debris to the collection point, assisted by volunteers in segregating plastic waste.

Odyuo reported that almost 50% of the Clean Doyang Mission is covered and expressed hope for further improvement. He acknowledged the challenges faced, particularly the difficulties in collecting debris within the water, and extended gratitude to various departments, organizations, and individuals involved in the mission.

John Zeliang, Executive Director and HOP Doyang, informed that the collected waste typically accumulates following heavy rainfall, with the last significant event occurring in May. He emphasized the focus on removing non-degradable plastic waste from the debris and expressed satisfaction at the participation of government, NGOs, and the public. Zeliang expressed hope for increased awareness and action regarding sensitization and segregation.

Mhonjan, President, and Vika Yeptho, General Secretary of Team Better Dimapur, highlighted their participation’s goal of raising awareness about maintaining clean surroundings and rivers. They urged participation from individuals, emphasizing Doyang’s significance to Nagaland as a whole.
