DC Kohima declares ASF infected and Surveillance Zones following outbreak

Following the confirmation of an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) at T Khel Model Village, Khikha Colony under Kohima district, Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B Henok Buchem, NCS, has declared T. Khel Model Village, Khikha Colony and Thizama Village as the Infected Zone, covering a radius of one kilometre from the infected premises.

A Surveillance Zone has also been declared within a radius of 10 kilometres from the infected premises.

According to a laboratory test report received from the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, the outbreak was confirmed on June 11, 2026.

To contain the spread of the disease, a total ban has been imposed on the export, import and movement of live pigs and pork products within, into or out of the Infected and Surveillance Zones. All pork meat markets and butchery shops located within the designated zones have been ordered to remain closed until further notice.

Pig farmers have been directed to restrict visitors, disinfect farm premises regularly and immediately report any unusual illness or mortality among pigs to the Veterinary Department. The public has also been advised to report any suspicious pig deaths to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.

The order further stated that carcasses must be disposed of through safe burial in accordance with official protocols and that dumping of carcasses in water bodies or open areas is strictly prohibited.

For public safety, citizens have been urged to remain vigilant and refrain from purchasing or consuming meat from unknown sources.

The Deputy Commissioner warned that any person found violating the directives will be liable for legal action under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, and other relevant provisions of law.
