The Elpis Society for Rehabilitation center was launched in Phek by Dr Pritpal Kaur, IPS, SP Phek, on August 16.

The Elpis Society is a community-based organization established to address the rehabilitation needs of individuals struggling with alcohol, drug, and substance dependence. “Elpis” translates in Greek to “Hope for good.”

Founded under the vision and leadership of Dr Kaur, the Society aims to extend healing and support the reintegration of individuals and their families affected by addiction. Its core focus areas include awareness generation, prevention, counseling, rehabilitation support, community engagement, and advocacy, while actively working to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with substance use disorders.

The launch program was chaired by Wazote Akami, General Secretary of the Elpis Society, and commenced with an invocation by Dr Vezhoto Soho, Associate Pastor, PTBC. The keynote address was delivered by Velato Nienu, President of the Elpis Society, who underscored the importance of compassion, community participation, and collective responsibility in addressing substance dependence.

A key highlight of the event was the formal unveiling of the Society’s Constitution by Dr Kaur. Encouraging everyone to work toward a drug- and intoxicant-free Phek district, she noted that this rehabilitation center and society represent her final parting gift to the district before her transfer, offered with the hope of fostering a more peaceful and progressive community.

Nuvekulu Ezung, Vice President, presented the Society’s vision and mission, followed by a musical performance of “When We Believe” by Vamvelu Lohe of Tune Up Academy. The vote of thanks was delivered by Shekunelu Venuh, and the program concluded with a mass spoken prayer and benediction led by Anieke Seyie, Women Chairperson, Angami Baptist Church, Phek.
