Extreme weather damaged households, public infrastructure in many districts, one casualty in Noklak: NSDMA

Kohima: Granaries, pipe lines, electric poles, agri crops and fisheries severely affected in Kiphire district

Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has today said that as a result of extreme weather on 20th April 2024, many districts in the State suffered damages to households and public infrastructure such as roads and bridges.

Joint Chief Executive Officer, NSDMA, Home Department, Johnny Ruangmei informed in a press release that the authority had issued a press statement on 18th April and also an SMS alert on 20th April before heavy thunderstorm and hailstorm lashed the State.

Tuensang: A major landslide occurred in St. John A Ward, Tuensang town where 25 houses had to be evacuated. The road connecting Mokokchung to Tuensang has been badly affected especially beginning from Longkhim to Tuensang where nearly 15 number of landslides have been reported, out of which 7 are severe landslides, this is likely to cut off the road between Mokokchung to Tuensang unless the concerned line departments take immediate measures. This landslide was triggered by the extreme weather event on the midnight of 20th April 2024.

NSDMA notified that damage reports were received from Chare, Chimonger, Longkhim, Mangakhi, Anangba, Helipong, Noksen, Litem, Tuensang village and Tuensang town. Road blockades, culvert damages and major landslides were reported from many locations.

Noklak: A casualty was reported due to flashflood which occurred in a field under Pathso Noking village, NSDMA said. The body of the victim was recovered by his village people on Monday.

Damages were also reported affecting road infrastructure especially at Noklak to Nokhu road and Noklak to Patsho, Noklak to Tuensang road. The road from Noklak to Nokhu was eventually opened for one way traffic with the intervention of the District Disaster Management Authority and concerned line departments.

Peren: Many houses were damaged severely by pre monsoon extreme weather events which occurred on the 26th March 2024.

Niuland: Reports have been received of damages to households in Hevishe village, power communication lines were disrupted in Showba area, many roofs were blown away in Kaghaboto village also vegetation was damaged and heavy water logging was also seen in many locations.

Kiphire: NSDMA has informed that the extreme weather has also severely affected houses, granaries, pipe lines, electric poles, agri crops and fisheries in Kiphire district. Damages were reported from Old Monger, Sitimi town area, Mutriki river area and Kiusam town area.

Chümoukedima: Damage reports to households were received from Manglumukh village, Shikhavi village and Sietheke Basa.

Zunheboto: Damages were reported from Akuba new village, VK town and Suruhoto in the district.

Wokha: Damages were reported from Airfield, Tsumang B and Etsutchukha colony. Damages include water logging, drainage blockade and household damages.
