The Political Science Association (PSA) of Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung, organised its 8th PSA Annual Lecture on October 6 on the theme “Stronger Together: Renewing the Promise of the United Nations,” in observance of United Nations Day.

The programme began with a welcome address and introductory note by Dr Lipokrenla, Head of the Department of Political Science.

Delivering the lecture, Dr. Madhavi R., IAS, Assistant Commissioner, Mokokchung, reflected on the history and continuing relevance of the United Nations (UN), established on October 24, 1945, to maintain international peace and security and promote cooperation among nations.

The lecture explored the importance of multilateralism in addressing global challenges, including climate change, conflict and inequality.

Emphasising that cooperation rests on unity rather than uniformity, Dr. Madhavi highlighted the need for nations to work together while respecting their differences. She observed that the spirit of the United Nations extended beyond international institutions, noting that even a village coming together to address a crisis reflected the principles of collective responsibility and cooperation.

She further stressed that renewing the promise of the United Nations required adapting the ideals of 1945 to the realities of 2026. Underscoring the importance of moving beyond individual interests towards a collective outlook, she observed that civilisation progressed when societies shifted from “me” to “we.”

India’s contribution to UN peacekeeping missions was also highlighted, along with the importance of dialogue and mutual trust in fostering international cooperation.

Reflecting on the context of Northeast India, Dr Madhavi emphasised the importance of respecting cultural diversity while pursuing shared aspirations. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were discussed in the context of inclusive development and the collective responsibility of nations to build a sustainable future.

Reaffirming the significance of the theme “Stronger Together,” she highlighted the enduring importance of cooperation, mutual understanding and a shared commitment to human dignity.

The programme concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session.
