Five villages in Mon district have been selected as Horticulture Model Villages under the state’s horticulture development programme, with each village focusing on a specific crop for cluster-based development.
Horticulture Minister, Salhoutuonuo Kruse informed the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on Thursday that Tanhai was selected in 2023-24 for citrus cultivation, followed by Chenwetnyu in 2024-25 for large cardamom.
Yonghong was selected in 2025-26 for kiwi cultivation, while Changlangsu and Sangsa were selected in 2026-27 for kiwi and Naga Mircha respectively.
The information was provided in response to a question raised by Nyamnyei Konyak, Member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, who sought details on the number of horticulture villages in Mon district and the beneficiaries selected village-wise.
The Minister stated that the names of beneficiaries from the respective villages had been furnished in an annexure to the Assembly.
Konyak urged the Horticulture Department to undertake soil testing across all areas to identify crops best suited to local soil and climatic conditions. He also called for extensive soil testing throughout the state to ensure that farmers are encouraged to cultivate crops suited to their respective areas.
During the discussion, Konyak also raised the issue of the Sub-Divisional Horticulture Officer (SDHO) at Tobu, noting that the previous officer had retired several years ago and seeking clarification on whether a replacement had been posted.
Kruse clarified that an SDHO for Tobu had already been posted.

Explaining the concept of Horticulture Model Villages, Kruse said the main approach was “one village, one crop”, aimed at developing horticulture clusters based on the suitability and potential of a particular crop in each village.
She said the programme seeks to encourage farmers to undertake intensive crop cultivation by adopting innovative and modern technologies to enhance production and productivity, while also strengthening marketing-related activities for farmers and Self-Help Groups.
The Horticulture Model Village initiative also aims to aggregate farmers’ produce within the model villages and facilitate primary post-harvest operations.
According to the Minister, the programme is intended to empower communities and villages to take greater responsibility for their own development while improving the socio-economic status of farmers.
The five selected villages in Mon district are:
Tanhai (2023-24) – Citrus
Chenwetnyu (2024-25) – Large Cardamom
Yonghong (2025-26) – Kiwi
Changlangsu (2026-27) – Kiwi
Sangsa (2026-27) – Naga Mircha
