A pall of grief has descended across Nagaland’s legal fraternity following the passing of Late Mayang
Lima Pongen, former Upa-Lokayukta of Nagaland and a distinguished judicial officer. A native of
Chichuyimlang Village, he retired in March 2025, just seven months ago, and succumbed to injuries sustained in a tragic road accident.
Following a tragic road accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on October 2 in Assam’s Golaghat district when the vehicle he was travelling from Tuli to Dimapur collided with a tree and a utility pole after the driver reportedly dozed off. The impact claimed the life of a female passenger on the spot, while former
Upa-Lokayukta of Nagaland, Mayang Lima, and two others sustained grievous injuries.
Mayang Lima was shifted to Christian Medical Centre, Jorhat, where he remained under intensive care. Plans were being made to airlift him to mainland facility for further treatment once his condition stabilized. He had been undergoing treatment at Jorhat Christian Medical Centre and, after battling his injuries, he succumbed to them on the morning of October 5, 2025, around 6 a.m.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 6 at Senden Riju, near ISBT, Purana Bazar, Dimapur, where friends, colleagues, and well-wishers are expected to pay their final respects. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Mayang Lima’s decades-long service in the judiciary earned him deep respect across Nagaland and beyond. Beginning his judicial career as a Judicial Magistrate 2nd Class/Assistant to the Deputy
Commissioner (Civil Cases)/Principal Magistrate, Juvenile Justice Board (1991–1993), he went on to hold several key positions including Judicial Magistrate 1st Class (1993–2003) and Additional Deputy
Commissioner (Judicial)/Special Judge, NDPS/President, District Consumer Forum/Member, MACT, and
Secretary, Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (2003–2007).

He later served as District & Sessions Judge/Special Judge (NDPS & Vigilance)/President, District
Consumer Forum/Member, MACT, and Member Secretary, Nagaland State Legal Services Authority
(2010–2012). From 2012 to 2014, he held the position of Registrar, Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, while also serving as Member Secretary, Nagaland State Legal Services Authority and Secretary, Gauhati
High Court Kohima Bench Legal Services Committee, in addition to being Project Coordinator, E-Courts Nagaland.
From 2014 to 2017, he served as Principal District & Sessions Judge/Special Judge (NDPS & POCSO)/President, District Consumer Forum/Member, MACT, and Secretary, District Legal Services Authority.
He was later appointed State Vigilance Commissioner in June 2018, a position he held until February
2019, before being appointed as Upa-Lokayukta of Nagaland in April 2019.
Beyond his judicial duties, Mayang Lima also contributed significantly to the legal community as a Board
Member of the North-East Judicial Officers Training Institute, Guwahati, Joint Secretary of the All India
Judges Association, and President of the Nagaland Judicial Officers Association.
