As part of the Indian Army’s Civic Action Programme (Project Sadbhavana), a state-of-the-art futsal ground in Jakhama and community toilets in Phesama were inaugurated by Col Gaurav Singh, SC, SM, Commanding Officer of the 164 Naga Regiment, in the presence of MLA Kevipodi Sophie on May 7.

The MLA and DPDB Chairman of Kohima District, Kevipodi Sophie, officially dedicated the futsal ground and community toilets to the villagers of Jakhama and Phesama, respectively, with the aim of promoting sports culture and improving sanitation in the region, informed a press release.

Speaking at the inaugural programme of the futsal ground in Jakhama, Kevipodi expressed his gratitude to Col Gaurav Singh and the Indian Army team at Zakhama Military Station for their significant contribution. He appreciated their efforts in providing the region with much-needed infrastructure that will benefit the entire Southern Angami area.

Highlighting the sports-loving nature of the Southern Angami people, the MLA noted that a lack of proper training fields and infrastructure had previously limited the potential of local youth in various sporting disciplines. Recalling past achievements, he said sportspersons from the region had brought laurels to the state and even represented the nation at national-level events. With the establishment of this new infrastructure, he expressed hope that it would reinvigorate the sporting spirit among the youth and encourage them to pursue excellence in sports.

He emphasized that the futsal ground is dedicated not only to Jakhama village and the Southern Angami region but also to the entire Kohima district, with the goal of nurturing talent and fostering a strong sports culture. Urging the youth to maintain discipline and take care of the facilities, he called on them to treat the infrastructure with a sense of ownership and pride.

The MLA also congratulated the football team of the 164 Naga Regiment, Jakhama, for winning the champion’s trophy at the recently concluded Northeast Sentinels Football Cup in Shillong. He commended Col Gaurav Singh for his inspiring leadership and thanked him for his deep concern for the youth, particularly the Naga boys of the 164 Naga Regiment.

In his address, Col Gaurav Singh stated that the idea to establish these facilities was initially proposed by Kevipodi, and the Indian Army committed to implementing the project. Commending the MLA’s vision and dedication to the welfare of his constituents, Col Singh expressed confidence that many meaningful initiatives would follow under his leadership.

He encouraged the youth to make the most of the newly constructed futsal ground and urged them to stay away from harmful substances such as alcohol. Emphasizing the meaning of “Sadbhavana” as “harmony,” Col Singh reiterated that the aim of the Indian Army, through Project Sadbhavana, is to bridge the gap between the people and the Army, fostering mutual trust and cooperation.
