Himanta Biswa Sarma sworn in as Assam Chief Minister for second term

Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term following the NDA’s emphatic victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president Nitin Nabin, senior Union ministers, and chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from several NDA-ruled states.

The new government marks the third consecutive NDA administration in Assam.

Along with Sarma, four ministers were also sworn in, including two from the BJP and one each from alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front. The ministers inducted into the cabinet are Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro and Ajanta Neog.

Senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass has been named the NDA’s candidate for the post of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The NDA secured a massive mandate in the Assam Assembly elections, winning 81 of the 126 seats and achieving a three-fourths majority in the House.

Congratulating Sarma after the oath-taking ceremony, Prime Minister Modi described the occasion as “a great day for Assam” and praised the Chief Minister’s leadership and administrative capabilities.

“A great day for Assam! For the third consecutive time, the NDA Government assumes office. Congratulations to Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma Ji on taking oath. He has made a mark as a wonderful administrator and has done pioneering work for the state. My best wishes to him for the tenure ahead,” Modi wrote on X.

The Prime Minister also congratulated the newly inducted ministers and expressed confidence that they would contribute towards accelerating Assam’s growth and development.

“Congratulations to Shri Rameswar Teli Ji, Shri Atul Bora Ji, Shri Charan Boro Ji and Smt. Ajanta Neog Ji on taking oath as Ministers in the Assam Government. My best wishes to them as they work towards strengthening the growth trajectory of Assam,” Modi said in another post. (with ANI inputs)
