India had the most successful day at the Paralympics on Monday, Day-5 of the Paris Paralympic Games 2024, winning eight medals including two golds, three silver and three bronze.
With Monday’s medals, India’s total tally is now 15 medals with three gold, five silver and seven bronze, placing itself in the 15th position.
Nitesh Kumar, the 29-year-old para shuttler secured gold in the Men’s Singles SL3 category beating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell 2-0 in straight games with a scoreline of 21-14, 18-21 & 23-21. Nitesh did not lose a single match at the Games.
Sumit Antil, a gold medalist at the Tokyo Paralympic Games 2020, won another gold at Paris in the Men’s Javelin Throw F64 category. His best throw of 70.59 metres secured him his second successive gold.
Suhas L. Yathiraj won gave India a silver in the Men’s Singles SL4 category after losing to France’s Lucas Mazur 9-21, 13-21 in the final match. This is also the second consecutive silver medal and the only Indian shuttler to medal at both Tokyo and Paris Paralympics.
Thulasimathi Murugesan secured silver medal in the Women’s Singles Badminton SU5, her first medal at the Paralympics. She lost toe China’s Qiu Xia Yang in the final match 17-21, 10-21
Yogesh Kathuniya sealed his second silver medal at the Paralympics with his season best throw of 42.22m Men’s Discuss Throw F56 category final.
Manisha Ramadass clinched the bronze medal in the Women’s Singles Badminton SU5 category. The Para shuttler outclassed Denmark’s Cathrine Rosengren 21-12, 21-8. It is the first-ever Paralympic medal for Manisha and also one of the first Paralympic medal for an Indian female Para Shuttler.
Nithya Sre won the Women’s Singles Badminton SH6 bronze medal match by defeating Indonesia’s Rina Marlina 21-14, 21-6 to win India’s 15th medal of the Paris Paralympics 2024. It is her debut appearance at the Paralympics.
Rakesh Kumar and Sheetal Devi clinched the bronze in the Mixed Team Compound Open category, beating Italy’s Matteo Bonacina and Eleonora Sarti 156-155 to clinch the second-ever Archery medal for India at the Paralympics.
