An awareness programme on drug addiction under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA) was organised at the Zisaji Presidency College (ZPC) Auditorium, Kiphire, on July 23 by Akehda Amulung Kiphire, the Implementing Support Agency (ISA) for NMBA, in collaboration with the District Administration, Kiphire.

The programme began with a welcome address by Longtili C Sangtam, founder of Akehda Amulung. The session was conducted by interns Azila of Baptist College, Kohima, and Levi of ZPC, Kiphire. An anti-drug pledge was administered by Irothe T Sangtam, CEO of Akehda Amulung, followed by the distribution of certificates.

Delivering the keynote address on the theme “Say No to Drugs – Yes to Life,” Col Rajiv Sharma, Commandant of 30 Assam Rifles, said addiction extends beyond substance abuse and can also involve unhealthy habits and behaviours. He noted that many people turn to addiction in an attempt to cope with stress, loneliness, frustration and emotional pain rather than seeking drugs themselves.

Emphasising the importance of mental well-being, Col Sharma encouraged participants to nurture strong family relationships, maintain healthy friendships and prioritise their mental health as preventive measures against addiction.

He also explained the six stages of recovery—Denial, Awareness, Planning, Action, Relapse and Freedom—describing recovery as a gradual process that requires consistent positive choices. He reminded participants that relapse should not be viewed as failure but as an opportunity to begin again with renewed determination.

Highlighting the role of self-discipline, he said discipline can replace dependence, confidence can overcome guilt and true victory lies in mastering oneself. He also advised young people to use technology responsibly rather than allowing it to control their lives.

Concluding his address, Col Sharma said every individual has the capacity to overcome addiction with the support of family, positive relationships, self-discipline and meaningful human connections. He urged participants to choose “connection over addiction” and work collectively towards building a healthier, drug-free society.

The programme concluded with closing remarks by Apiba A. of Akehda Amulung, followed by a vote of thanks, certificate distribution, refreshments and a plantation drive, reaffirming the organisers’ commitment to promoting a drug-free and responsible society.
