Maj Gen Lakhera inaugurates Sports Meet of Mt Olive College Kohima, points out lack of sports facilities in State

Kohima: IG emphasizes role of sports in shaping individuals, promoting discipline, respect for rules, and resilience

Major General Vikas Lakhera, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (IGAR) North, inaugurated the three-day Sports Meet of Mt Olive College Kohima on Wednesday at IGAR North playground. The Media Cell, Mt Olive College Kohima informed that in his address, Maj Gen Lakhera rued the lack of sufficient sports facilities in Nagaland, including the absence of international standard football grounds, despite the sport’s popularity in the state.

He noted the enthusiasm of Nagaland’s youth for sports, despite the challenges posed by inadequate infrastructure. Lakhera expressed concern over the state’s sports performance lagging behind other northeastern states due to the lack of proper structures and training opportunities.

Maj Gen Lakhera, stressed the need for improving sports facilities to nurture the potential and talent of young athletes. He further emphasized the role of sports in shaping individuals, promoting discipline, respect for rules, and resilience in personal and professional life.

Encouraging participants to enjoy the event, give their best, and face challenges with determination, the IG urged everyone to strive for excellence and make positive impacts in sports, education, and personal endeavors. Maj Gen Lakhera thanked the organizing committee, educators, and stakeholders for their efforts in promoting sports and education in Nagaland, while extending best wishes to the Mount Olive College community and emphasizing the importance of collaboration for a brighter future.

During the programme, Dr. Koseno, Principal, Mt Olive College Kohima, stressed the importance of sports in our lives, emphasizing its role in physical well-being and character development. She highlighted the teamwork aspect of sports and its lessons in trust and resilience.

The three-day event will feature various sports including tug of war, futsal, volleyball, basketball, badminton, table tennis, arm wrestling, and athletics competitions.
