Huge contingents of security forces have been deployed at Kangpokpi following the protest rally called by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) on 3 January 2025 that turned violent, Manipur Police stated. The CoTU are demanding for withdrawal of Central Security Forces deployed at Saibol village under Kangpokpi district.

In a post on X, the state’s police informed that the “violent protestors attacked the office of Superintendent of Police Kangpokpi by pelting stones and petrol bombs”, to which the security forces retaliated by resorting to the “use of adequate force to disperse the mob” and to bring the situation under control.

“In this incident, Shri Manoj Prabhakar, SP Kangpokpi District was injured and some vehicles also were damaged, Manipur Police added. it also mentioned that Prabhakar received necessary medical treatment and had resumed his duties in leading the joint security forces in tackling the situation.

Meanwhile, the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) has condemned SP Kangpokpi for not removing the CAPF deployed from the valley into the fringe areas at Saibol Bungpi region of Sadar Hills, Lhungtin Sub-Division and has further extended its Total Shutdown till 2:00 am of 5th January 2025.

Earlier on 2nd January 2024, the CoTU has stated in a press statement that the deployment of CAPF at Saibol Bungpi region “is an act of oppression, one that disrupts peace and undermines the very fabric of Kuki-Zo tribal existence.” The Committee also said that its protest was a fight for justice and called on the community to “rise in unwavering solidarity”.
