Neihunuo Sorhie of Nagaland received the Padma Shri Award for the year 2023 from the President of India, Droupadi Murmu at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-I held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday.
Sorhie was awarded for her significant contributions toward protecting indigenous Naga craft of weaving. She has also trained to over 300 local Naga women including school dropouts, widows, children and students in loin loom weaving, knitting and beadwork to help them become self- reliant and earn their livelihood.
The ‘master weaver’, dressed in a black top, Angami Lohe chiecha (mekhala/wrap) and accessorised with Angami necklaces, walked straight to Smriti Irani, Union Minister for women and child development and minority affairs, when her name was announced and shook hands with her. She then made her way to the President, with whom she shook hands too.

On Wednesday’s ceremony, President Murmu presented three Padma Vibhushan, four Padma Bhushan and forty-seven Padma Shri Awards for the year 2023.
Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Minister for Home Affairs and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, other Ministers of the Union and dignitaries were also present.
The Padma Awardees will pay homage at the National War Memorial on Thursday morning and also visit the Amrit Udyan and Rashtrapati Bhawanas well as will visit Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya.
Moa Subong from Nagaland, who founded the rock fusion band Abiogenesis and is famous for inventing and playing the Bumhum, a wind bamboo instrument, will also receive the Padma Shri Award at a later Civil Investiture Ceremony.
