Countering the Ao Student Conference,AKM’s notification directing business establishments in Mokokchung district to remain closed on Sundays, the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) stated that the student organization made the diktat without consulting the appropriate body.

In a statement issued on March 8, the MCCI advised the need to take the ground reality into consideration by consulting with the stakeholders in a democratic manner before issuing notifications on matters that are beyond the purview of one’s authority.

“MCCI does not endorse keeping the market open on Sundays but there are certain economic activities and practical realities that need due cognizance, as well as certain essential and emergency services that need to remain open even on Sundays which do not in any way contravene “the law and practices of the land”,” stated MCCI

Considering Mokokchung as the most peaceful market in Nagaland today, the MCCI expressed dismay on any entity causing chaos in the market.

“If there are any individuals or groups with any grievance in the market, or if there are any issues in the market in Mokokchung that is of concern to any organization or entity, it is advised that the MCCI be taken into confidence,” stated the MCCI expressing the willingness to address any public grievances in the market that is brought to their attention, if it is within their ambit. “As such, the office of the MCCI may be approached any day of the week for consultation and necessary action,” added MCCI.

“In order to “maintain the sanctity and to safeguard the sentiments of the people irrespective of faith” in the market, MCCI has always denounced vigilantism in Mokokchung and we remain committed to it. As such, the AKM is requested to withhold the said notification in the larger interest of Mokokchung,” asserted the MCCI.
