Mokokchung Town is set to commemorate the 50th edition of the Inter-ward Cake Race on December 23 at Town Square, Mokokchung. Chumlamo Humtsoe, ADC & Administrator, Mokokchung Municipal Council, announced the celebration in a press conference held at the MMC Conference Hall today.

The 50th edition, initially slated for 2021, faced two cancellations due to the pandemic. However, this year witnesses a collaborative effort from across Mokokchung to organize the event. Various entities, including the Mokokchung Municipal Council, District Administration, All Ward Union, Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem, Bakery and Restaurant Association Mokokchung, and Pick-up Truck Owners Association Mokokchung, are actively involved in the coordination.

Emphasizing environmental responsibility, the convenor stated that the event will be plastic-free, discouraging the use of single-use plastics. Organized by the Mokokchung Municipal Council in collaboration with the Seasonal Club, Mokokchung, the first inter-ward cake race was initiated by the Seasonal Club in 1971.

The grand event is scheduled to commence at 7:00 am on December 23 at the main town square. Sharingain Longkumer, Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, will grace the occasion as the guest of honour. A total of 11 participants from 18 wards will compete in the cake race, accompanied by a fancy dress competition among the wards on the theme “The Three Magi.”

It was also informed that the best-maintained ward and the most progressed ward will receive awards during the event.
