Opinions are widely divided regarding the ‘action’ taken by the Tsumang Youth Organization against two drug peddlers who were caught selling ‘Sunflower’ drugs on Sunday Evening.

After that incident, the organization has been receiving strong backlash by netizens on social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube who mostly opined that humiliating the two women by chopping their hair was an unwise approach. Some commented that the two peddlers deserved punishment for committing the crime. but the organization could have tried other forms of punishment rather than cutting their hair.

A netizen said, “such level of public humiliation was not needed….. Levy a fine with a stern warning and even help them financially to look for other means of living, if they are economically incapable. They are human after all…. They deserve a second chance.”

Somebody expressed concerns that with the rise in drug cases Wokha district may be tagged the ‘worst district’ with highest number of drug use cases.

“Drug peddling is as serious as murder. It not only does affect the drug user but it involve the whole family of the addict as well as the society”, another opined.

Despite the law agencies performing their part and take various steps to spread awareness, amongst the users yet the agencies have limitations guided by procedures and principles and that’s where the apex organization, bodies have to come forward to play a proactive role, a person commented.

“Who will catch the main agents dealing with drugs? Will the same action be taken against them like the two girls?” someone questioned.

Tsumang Youth Organization had on Monday taken full responsibility for cutting the hair of the women who it said had been caught several times earlier and let off with warnings and fines. TYO had also stated that the duo was even caught in June 2023 as well and handed over to the police. The organization claimed that it had tried to help them to get counselling, but it had all been in futile.

TYO had also informed that anybody seeking answers may approach its office for clarification.

Wokha Superintendent of Police,  Aotula T Imchen, IPS asserted that the department is putting its maximum efforts in fighting the drug menace. She added that the the police force updates it’s seizures and cases on daily basis in its official Facebook page for all to witness it’s activities.
