The first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in West Bengal is set to be sworn in on May 9 at the Brigade Parade Ground, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Announcing the development, BJP’s West Bengal president and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya said the date was chosen to coincide with the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore as per the Bengali calendar.

While confirming the swearing-in ceremony, Bhattacharya refrained from disclosing the name of the Chief Minister, stating that the decision would be taken by the party leadership.

Earlier in the day, Bhattacharya, along with BJP central observer Sunil Bansal and party MPs Jyotirmoy Mahato and Saumitra Khan, visited the state secretariat Nabanna for a meeting with Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala. The discussions focused on preparations for the oath-taking ceremony and measures to curb post-poll violence.

Bhattacharya issued a stern warning against any form of political retaliation, asserting that the party would not tolerate forceful takeovers of offices or acts of revenge politics. He urged the administration to act firmly against those involved in violence, irrespective of political affiliation.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has directed state authorities, including the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and central forces, to ensure strict action and maintain zero tolerance towards post-election violence following reports of unrest across parts of the state.
